Definition of Biography Text

A biography is a story or information about a person's life. A biography is more complex than presenting a biography and data on a person's work, it also tells about the feelings involved in these events. 

The biography describes in full the life of a character from childhood to old age, even to death. All services, works, and everything that is produced or done by a character is also clarified. The biographical text was composed by others, not by myself.

Biography consists of two words, namely: 

- Bios which means Life 

- Graphia which means writing.

Biography text is a detailed description or account of a person’s life and written by someone else, it is nonfiction text.

Function of Biography

1. To know a person’s story about his/her life outside of any accomplishments this person may be known for.

2. To give much information easily and educate the readers.

Untuk memberikan banyak informasi dengan mudah dan mendidik para pembaca.

Characteristics of Biography

> Biography is not written by subject and always written in the third person.

The biographical text is not made by the person whose life is being told, but is told by someone else in the third person point of view.

> Based on research.

The text is made based on the facts of a character's life experience containing the story or story of a character in navigating his life, whether it is in the form of advantages, problems or shortcomings written by other people so that they should be exemplary.

> Describes the person’s surroundings (where, when and how the person lived).

Telling in detail about the information about the characters being told which includes W/H Questions (What, Where, When, Why, How)

> Use vivid language to narrate events.

The use of language must be clearly applied in a biographical text. In order to avoid errors in the information presented.

Generic Structure

1. Orientation (Introduction)

It is the opening paragraph, gives the readers the background information of the person.

Usually contains narrated biodata such as full name, place and date of birth. Some general information can also be presented in this section as an introduction to the characters.

2. Events

In events, should be in chronological order.

This stage is part of the events or events experienced by the character. Contains an explanation of a story in the form of problem solving, career processes, and various events that have been experienced by the character to lead him to a success.

3. Re-Orientation (Closing)

It consists of a conclusion or comment or the writer. Tell about the achievement or the contribution of the person.

In closing, this section contains the author's view of the characters being told. 

This reorientation is optional, which means the author can give his personal view on the character being told or the author does not give his personal view on the character being told, which is not an important matter.

Grammar and Language Features

1) Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense is the main menu in making Biography Text. A simple form of an event that happened in the past. Use the second form of the verb (verb 2).

Example :

1. Harry Edward Styles was born in Redditch, Worcestershire on 1 February 1994.

2. He is the son of Anne Cox (née Selley) and Desmond “Des” Styles, who worked in finance.

3. Many of his ancestors were farm laborers in Norfolk.

4. Styles was raised in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire after his parents moved there along with his older sister, Gemma, when he was a child.

5. He attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School.

2) Temporal Sequence and Temporal Conjunction.

As a liaison between one sentence with another sentence in the order of time. 

- Temporal Sequence (sequence of time) 

- Temporal Conjunction (temporal conjunction).

Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12, 1809. He came from a wealthy family and never had to work. He studied medicine and theology. In 1831 he graduated from University of Cambridge with a degree of theology.

He began a career as a scientist quite by chancE. On December 27,1831, 22 years old Charles Darwin joined the crew of the HMS Beagle as a naturalist.The five years expedition collected hydrographic, geologic, and meteorologic data from South America and many other regions around the worlD. Darwin’s own observation on this voyage led to his theory of natural selection.

Charles Darwin was greatly influenced by the geologist Adam Sedgwick and naturalist John Henslow in his development of the theory of natural selection, which was to become the foundation concept supporting the theory of evolution. Darwin’s theory holds that environmental effects lead to varying degrees of reproductive success in individuals and groups of organisms. Natural selection tends to promote adaptation in organisms when necessary for survival. This revolutionary theory was published in 1859 in Darwin’s now famous On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

Victoria Caroline Beckham is an English singer-songwriter, dancer, model, actress, fashion designer and business woman. She was born on April 17, 1974, in Essex, EnglanD. She became famous in the 1990’s with the pop group “The Spice Girl”and was known as Posh SpicE. In 1999, she married the Manchester United and England footballer, David Beckham. They have four children, three sons and a daughter.

After The Spice Girl split up, she pursued a solo singer career, but also started her own fashion range called dVb StylE. Since this initial foray into fashion Victoria Beckham has brought out her own range of sunglasses and fragrance, entitled “Intimately Beckham”and a range of handbags and jewelry.

In addition she had written two best-selling books: one her autobiography and the other, a fashion guide.

Biography of Michael Faraday

Faraday was born on September 22, 1791 in Newington Butts (now part of the London Borough of Southwark). He is the third of four children.

Faraday comes from a poor family, he only got the basics of school education such as reading, writing, and chose to study self-taught. At the age of 14, he became a newspaper deliveryman and bookbinder as well as a student of George Riebau, a local bookbinder and seller. Seven years Faraday studied there. He spent a lot of time reading books such as Isaac Watts' The Improvement of the Mind.

Faraday's interest in science, especially electricity, began to emerge after he read Jane Marcet's Conversations of Chemistry.

In physics, his research on magnetic fields in conductors carrying direct currents, which Faraday used as the basic concept of electromagnetic fields. Faraday also determined that magnetism could affect light rays and that there was an underlying relationship between the two phenomena.

Faraday's invention of the electromagnetic rotary device formed the basis of electric motor technology and it was in large part due to his efforts to show that electricity was becoming feasible for use in the technology.

Conlcusion :

Biography text is a text that describes a person's story in the past. This biographical text is used by many people as a complete explanation of the characters who have passed away. 

Although we cannot meet in person, we can know the stories and journeys of many characters in the past.
